Syria announced on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, the reopening of the Nassib border crossing with Jordan and the resumption of passenger and freight traffic. The decision came shortly after Damascus closed the main crossing following Jordanian airstrikes on targets in southern Syria.
Jordan said the attacks targeted positions belonging to the Islamic State group and that more than 20 members of the organization were killed. According to authorities in Amman, a major weapons depot was also destroyed. Syria reported seven people killed, including five victims—among them three children—in a bombing of the town of al-Taf in Daraa province.
Damascus condemned the attacks as an “unacceptable violation” of its airspace and temporarily suspended traffic through Nassib. On Tuesday evening, however, the foreign ministers of the two countries spoke by phone and underscored the importance of cooperation in combating terrorism.
The two governments also agreed to establish a joint security committee. Monday’s strikes marked the most serious episode of tension between Syria and Jordan since the change of power in Damascus in December 2024.
