The legislative elections in Hungary concluded on Sunday, with a record turnout of nearly 80%. The opposition party Tisza, led by Peter Magyar, achieved a decisive victory, holding a constitutional majority, and Viktor Orban acknowledged his defeat.
Election results after counting 98.94% of the votes:
Tisza Party (Peter Magyar's party) - 138 seats
Fidesz Party (Viktor Orban's party), together with KDNP - 55 seats
Mi Hazánk Party - 6 seats
Supporters of Peter Magyar celebrated in the streets of Budapest, where they lit torches and sang. Magyar promised that Hungary would become a strong ally in the European Union and called for the resignation of several officials. He emphasized that, with a two-thirds majority, he would restore the system of checks and balances in the country. Viktor Orban, after 16 years in power, stated that his party would serve Hungary from the opposition, acknowledging that the result is painful.
The first partial results indicated a lead for Tisza with 125 seats, while Fidesz remained behind with 65. The final result is expected to be known only in a week, after counting the votes cast in advance.
