A recent survey conducted by Ipsos on nearly 10,000 voters from new countries shows a growing concern among citizens in the Western world regarding threats to democracy. Almost 50% of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with how democracy is functioning, with the exception of Sweden, where citizens have a positive opinion. Gideon Skinner from Ipsos highlighted concerns related to fake news, misinformation, and the lack of accountability among politicians.

The survey also revealed that voters in France and the Netherlands are the most worried about the future of democracy. In most countries, more respondents believe that democracy has deteriorated in the last five years, and in the USA, 61% of voters think that the state of democracy has worsened since 2020. Citizens support measures to protect democracy, including laws against corruption and regulations to combat misinformation on social media.
