The German government and military conducted a simulation exercise on Wednesday in response to an attack scenario, similar to the September 11, 2001 attacks in the USA.
The cabinet of Chancellor Friedrich Merz participated to make real-time decisions in a critical situation deemed dangerous for public security. The exercise, named 'Renegade', involved the hijacking of a civilian aircraft in German airspace, reminiscent of the 2001 attacks. A 'stolen' civilian plane crossed Germany, heading for a fictitious public event. As a result of the government's decision, two Eurofighter fighter jets were dispatched on alert mission to escort the hijacked plane to an airfield in the northern part of the country.
A government source emphasized that response exercises are essential for national preparedness against hybrid threats.
