Germany is preparing to send a reconnaissance unit of the Bundeswehr to Greenland, starting Thursday, according to the publication Bild. The operation is coordinated from Copenhagen and not through NATO structures, considering that the Nordic NATO states, including Greenland, are under the command of the NATO headquarters in Norfolk, USA. This deployment, which has not been officially confirmed, marks an escalation of European military presence in the Arctic, in the context of the United States' efforts to take control of the island.
The German mission will precede a more coordinated NATO-level presence, but it will be managed outside official command structures. Denmark has announced a significant increase in its presence, and other European NATO partners are expected to join. Germany will involve the Navy and Air Force, and officers will assess the contribution of the German Armed Forces in a joint EU military mission. The German Minister of Defense emphasized the need to protect Greenland from the aggression of Russia and China.
