Approximately six million workers will benefit from this measure, which was recommended by an independent commission. However, the Social Democratic Party (SPD), part of the governing coalition, wanted a higher increase, to 15 euros per hour. The minimum wage in Germany is now the fourth highest in the European Union, after Luxembourg, Ireland, and the Netherlands.
