The German Minister of Defense, Boris Pistorius, commented on the withdrawal of American troops from Germany, announced by the Pentagon, stating that this was to be expected. He emphasized that Europeans need to take on more responsibilities for their security, in the context of international tensions, especially with Russia.
The announcement of the withdrawal came after a dispute between Donald Trump and Chancellor Friedrich Merz regarding the American strategy in Iran, with Trump reproaching Europeans for their lack of support. Approximately 5,000 of the nearly 40,000 American soldiers in Germany will be withdrawn, according to Pistorius's statements.
He mentioned that the American presence remains important for Germany and the USA, serving as a collective deterrent. Germany is rebuilding its army to respond to Russian threats and to reduce dependence on American security. Although the American military presence has been reduced since the end of the Cold War, it remains essential for German security policy and NATO.
