General Ben Hodges, former commander of the United States Army in Europe, stated that Europe must stand firm against the Trump administration, amid fears that the U.S. might try to take Greenland by force. Hodges emphasized that sending American troops to occupy Greenland would be an illegal order.

He criticized Europe for relying too much on American protection and neglecting its own security, and now facing an uncertain partner. He also mentioned that, following recent U.S. actions in Venezuela, the idea of an intervention in Greenland is becoming more plausible. Hodges warned that an attack on a NATO state would be disastrous for the alliance and could lead to a loss of trust within NATO, a scenario favorable to Russia.
