On Thursday morning, Marina Franceză intercepted a Russian tanker in the Mediterranean Sea, suspected of being part of Vladimir Putin's 'phantom fleet.' President Emmanuel Macron announced on social media platform X that the operation was carried out in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and emphasized that France will not tolerate any violation of its territory. The tanker, named Grinch, was coming from Murmansk and was sailing under the Comoros flag, with suspicions of using a false flag.
The capture took place between Spain and North Africa, and the vessel is being escorted to an anchorage point for further checks. This action is part of efforts to enforce international sanctions against activities that contribute to financing the war in Ukraine. A judicial investigation has been opened following this operation.
