The majority of deputies in the National Assembly of France consider it necessary to revise the agreement signed with Algeria in 1968, which regulates the movement and residence of Algerian citizens in France. A resolution proposal submitted by the National Rally was adopted with 185 votes in favor and 184 against, calling for the 'denunciation' of this agreement, although it is not binding.
Over time, French officials, including former Prime Minister François Bayrou, have expressed the desire to reexamine all agreements with Algeria, emphasizing that its maintenance is no longer justified.
The 1968 agreement provides Algerians with more favorable conditions for entering France, including the rapid issuance of residence permits, but it is criticized for excluding Algerians from common law regarding immigration. Algeria has refused to relinquish the privileges granted by this agreement, threatening to cease cooperation regarding terrorism in the event of any changes.
