Four suspects have been placed in pretrial detention in Serbia as part of an investigation into an alleged organized group that reportedly obtained explosives and drones and transferred them to European Union member states. Serbian prosecutors confirmed the information on Thursday in a statement sent to AFP.

According to investigators, the equipment was transported to “locations planned and agreed in advance.” The group is believed to have four other members. The investigation was opened on June 12, after explosives were discovered in April near a gas pipeline on Serbia’s border with Hungary.

The German magazine Der Spiegel reported that German investigators are examining possible links between the Serbian case and a drone carrying an explosive charge found last month at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The investigations also concern the arrest, on June 11, of two men transporting explosives and drone components at the Serbia-Hungary border.

Serbian prosecutors have not confirmed a link to the Leipzig incident, however, and have not made public details about the suspects, including their nationalities. They announced that they are working with authorities from several European countries.

In April, President Aleksandar Vučić warned that the explosives found could have caused significant damage to the pipeline carrying Russian gas to Hungary. Ukraine rejected allegations at the time that it was behind the incident. Serbia, an ally of Russia, has not imposed sanctions on Moscow following the invasion of Ukraine and has previously been identified as a base for Russian foreign operations.
