The municipality of Florence has decided to completely eliminate electric scooter rental services starting in April 2026, after two extensions of the existing permits. This measure comes in response to new national regulations that impose additional obligations on users, such as wearing a helmet and installing license plates. The Florentine authorities believe that compliance with these rules is difficult to monitor in the case of short-term rented scooters, which could lead to systematic violations of the Traffic Code. The increase in fines at the national level amplifies the pressure on operators and users. The mobility advisor, Andrea Giorgio, signed the ban resolution, emphasizing that inspections by the Municipal Police have shown the impossibility of effectively enforcing the helmet-wearing obligation. In the European context, Florence has chosen to completely eliminate the service, considering that the risks to road safety outweigh the benefits. Electric scooters will be permanently withdrawn from the city, giving operators and residents time to adapt to the new rules.
