Before the incident in Saint Petersburg, Ukraine was associated with drone attacks on energy facilities in Russia, including fuel depots and refineries. In southern Russia, authorities reported fires at civilian companies after debris from drones shot down by air defenses fell, while interceptions and damage following attacks were announced in other regions.
At the same time, drones were reported to have struck refineries, causing fires and disrupting the operation of the facilities. In some cases, the drone manufacturer was mentioned in the context of the attacks, while Russian authorities reported shootdowns and no casualties, although the extent of the damage was not always independently confirmed.
In parallel, the attacks also targeted civilian infrastructure in Russian cities, affecting the activities of some companies and the functioning of certain services. In this context, Saint Petersburg had previously been described as the target of attacks involving unmanned aerial vehicles, affecting warehouses and causing temporary suspensions of activity at certain locations.
