Ukrainian drones damaged the YANOS refinery in Yaroslavl, Russia / The fire was extinguished, with no casualties reported

A drone attack attributed to Ukraine damaged the YANOS refinery in the Russian city of Yaroslavl, and the fire that broke out following the strike was extinguished, the region’s governor, Mikhail Yevrayev, said on Telegram on Thursday. No casualties were reported, while the extent of the damage was not immediately clear.

It is one of the few official Russian acknowledgments of an attack on a refinery, as Moscow and Kyiv continue to strike each other’s energy infrastructure and economic targets. The incident occurred after U.S. President Donald Trump announced an alleged energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, which has not been confirmed by either side.

The YANOS refinery is owned by Slavneft, a company jointly controlled by Rosneft and Gazprom Neft. Located approximately 250 kilometers northeast of Moscow, it can process 300,000 barrels of oil per day. Industry sources said that two of the three processing units were shut down following a drone attack on August 28.

In 2024, the refinery processed 14.9 million tonnes of crude oil, producing, among other products, 2.6 million tonnes of gasoline and four million tonnes of diesel fuel. Authorities in Krasnodar also reported a fire caused by falling drone debris at an industrial complex.
