The U.S. Department of Justice has stated that federal employees can reinstall the TikTok app on their work devices, considering that the ban imposed in 2022 is no longer relevant. This ban was initially instituted for national security reasons, but authorities have concluded that the restructuring of TikTok's operations in the U.S. has changed the circumstances.
ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, completed in January the transfer of control over American user data to the new entity TikTok USDS, which will manage this data and ensure the security of the recommendation algorithm in the cloud infrastructure of Oracle. The Department of Justice stated that the current version of the app no longer poses security risks, allowing federal agencies to decide on the installation of the app according to their own policies.
The new ownership structure of TikTok USDS includes 80.1% ownership by American investors, while ByteDance retains a minority stake of 19.9%. Although Congress passed a law requiring ByteDance to sell its U.S. operations, the Trump administration decided not to enforce this measure.
Approximately 200 million Americans currently use TikTok.
