TikTok has agreed to pay 400 million dollars to the United States to settle a lawsuit claiming it violated children's privacy. The agreement, considered one of the largest in history on this topic, stems from a legal action initiated in 2024 by the Department of Justice, under former President Joe Biden.
It alleged that TikTok and its parent company ByteDance collected massive data on users under 13 years old, violating the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). TikTok will pay 300 million dollars immediately and 100 million dollars later, along with the cancellation of a consent decree from 2019.
Other companies, such as YouTube and Epic Games, have paid similar fines for COPPA violations. Although the lawsuit was initiated before the separation of TikTok's operations in the U.S. from those in China, the agreement only pertains to activities in China. TikTok has undergone significant changes in ownership structure and privacy measures for young users.
