A devastating explosion occurred in a mosque in the city of Maiduguri, northeastern Nigeria, during evening prayers, causing the death of seven worshippers, according to the leader of the anti-jihadist militia, Babakura Kolo. The bomb, apparently placed inside the mosque in Gamboru Square, exploded at the moment when the crowd was gathering for the service. Although Kolo reported seven deaths, a mosque official confirmed eight victims. Witnesses suggest that the incident could be a suicide attack, and the number of injured remains unknown. Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, has been affected by jihadist insurgency since 2009, but has not suffered major attacks in recent years. However, there are concerns that violence could return, given the ongoing activity of rebel groups in the rural area. So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
