European countries, including France and Italy, have begun discussions with Tehran to negotiate an agreement to ensure the safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic point for the transport of approximately one-fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas. These negotiations come in the wake of Iranian attacks on oil tankers and the promise of the new supreme leader of Iran to maintain the closed route.
European officials emphasize that there are no guarantees that the discussions will progress, and Tehran is suspected of trying to influence energy prices to pressure the United States. In this context, oil prices have risen significantly, and European governments are concerned about the impact of a potential blockade of the strait on their economies. Although France has stated that it could participate in escorting ships, officials acknowledge that the risks of escalating conflict remain a major concern.
