European allies have expressed support for Denmark after American President Donald Trump reaffirmed that the U.S. "needs" Greenland, a semi-autonomous region of Denmark, for national security reasons. Leaders from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and Denmark emphasized that Greenland belongs to its people and that only Denmark and Greenland can decide on their relations. Trump left open the possibility of using force to take control of the territory, and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that a U.S. attack would mean the end of NATO.

Tensions have been heightened by a recent U.S. military intervention in Venezuela, which raised fears that the U.S. might use force to gain control over Greenland. Following the raid in Venezuela, the wife of a senior Trump advisor posted a map of Greenland colored in the colors of the American flag, suggesting an imminent annexation. In a statement, Stephen Miller, another advisor, claimed that the U.S. believes Greenland should be part of the country to ensure Arctic security. European allies stressed that Arctic security must be achieved collectively, respecting UN principles, including sovereignty and territorial integrity. Greenland, with a population of 57,000 people, has had extensive self-governance since 1979, but most residents oppose annexation by the U.S.
