A study conducted by the Bertelsmann Foundation, based on surveys in all 27 member states of the European Union, reveals that the majority of citizens do not consider the United States of America a trustworthy partner. Of the more than 18,000 adults surveyed, 58% stated that the USA is not a trustworthy partner, and in Germany, this percentage rose to 73%. Only 31% of respondents consider the USA the most important partner of the EU, a significant decrease from 51% in September 2024. Almost 73% of respondents support the idea that Europe should chart its own course, an opinion that has increased from 63% at the end of 2024. The study suggests that a polarizing American presidency and geopolitical tensions have led to a heightened desire for independence in Europe. Although China has not gained popularity as an alternative partner, the United Kingdom and Canada are perceived as more important strategic partners. Support for NATO remains strong, with 63% of respondents considering it essential for security.
