The World Health Organization declared on Sunday the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda 'a public health emergency of international concern', the highest level of alert available.

Although the situation is alarming, the WHO emphasized that it does not meet the criteria for a pandemic emergency. The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo virus, has erupted in Ituri province, where up to now 80 suspected deaths, eight confirmed cases, and 246 suspected cases have been reported in the health zones of Bunia, Rwampara, and Mongbwalu.

The spread of the virus is concerning, with one confirmed case in Kinshasa and two cases in Kampala, including one death. This spread in regional capitals raises alarm bells regarding the control of transmission in urban areas and at borders. Authorities are facing major challenges in managing the outbreak.
