Donald Trump has become the first sitting American president in the past 100 years whose portrait appears on a coin officially issued by the United States. The U.S. Mint launched a commemorative one-dollar coin on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, dedicated to the 250th anniversary of the country’s independence, and the products became unavailable on the website within just a few hours.

Trump’s portrait appears on the obverse of the coin, alongside the inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “1776 ~ 2026.” The reverse features the presidential seal, the American eagle, and the number “250.” The coin is made from an alloy based on copper, zinc, manganese, and nickel, contains no gold, and will enter circulation this fall.

The Mint sold the coins in rolls of 25 for $61 and bags of 100 for $154.50. Among them, 250,000 coins struck on July 4 and marked “July 4th” were distributed randomly, a detail intended for collectors.

The precedent dates back to 1926, when Calvin Coolidge appeared on a commemorative half-dollar coin. Trump’s depiction is possible under legislation concerning the redesign of coins for the 2026 anniversary, which prohibits portraits of living people on the reverse, but not on the obverse.ە
