Donald Trump promises $5,000 to every adult in the U.S. if Republicans retain control of Congress after the November elections

President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday, at a Republican convention held in Dallas, that he would grant $5,000 to every adult in the United States if his party retains control of the House of Representatives and the Senate after the November midterm elections. Trump described the measure as a “dividend” financed by the economic success of his administration and specified that the money must be spent in the United States.

The term does not have its usual financial meaning here, since citizens do not own shares in the U.S. government. The proposal would essentially represent a direct cash payment, similar to the stimulus checks distributed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With approximately 270 million adults in the U.S., the program would cost around $1.35 trillion. Trump did not provide details about the source of funding, eligibility criteria, or the payment schedule. Such a measure would almost certainly require congressional approval and could not be implemented unilaterally by the president.

The promise comes as Republicans fear that Trump’s low popularity could affect their majority in the House of Representatives and even in the Senate in the midterm elections.
