Argentinian scientists have discovered in the Andes the nearly complete skeleton of a new species of dinosaur, named 'Huayracursor jaguensis', which lived about 230 million years ago, making it one of the oldest known species of dinosaurs. The discovery took place at an altitude of 3,000 meters in the province of La Rioja, carried out by a team of paleontologists from Conicet, the public research institute in Argentina.
The species lived at the end of the Triassic, an important geological period during which the first dinosaurs appeared. According to researcher Agustin Martinelli, 'Huayracursor' is estimated to be between 230 and 225 million years old. Although it is part of a line of herbivorous dinosaurs, it is estimated that an adult individual measured about two meters and weighed around 18 kilograms. The discovered skeleton includes part of the skull, a complete vertebral column, and nearly intact forelimbs and hind limbs, making it a valuable reference for the study of dinosaur evolution. The discovery was published in the specialized journal Nature.
