On Wednesday, France was hit by severe thunderstorms with wind gusts of more than 140 km/h, heavy rain and hail after a heatwave that brought temperatures above 40°C. Two casualties were reported, including a 12-year-old child. Over 120 firefighters responded to 90 incidents and almost 100 000 homes were without electricity. In Paris, the storm caused flooding and damage to buildings, including the National Assembly. Meteorologists warned of the dangers and closed several train lines. The storms were preceded by a heat wave, the 50th heat wave since 1947.
