The Prime Minister of France, Sebastien Lecornu, stated that, starting from June 18, the heatwave has caused the death of 40 people due to drowning, most of whom are young. Lecornu described the situation as a "sad plague" during a meeting of the Interministerial Crisis Cell. Meteorologists forecast temperatures of up to 44 degrees Celsius in the southwest of France, and the Prime Minister has requested the government to develop three scenarios to cope with this crisis, including a possible extension of the heatwave into July. Lecornu emphasized the importance of preparing the medical system and Civil Security to respond to the challenges posed by the heat. He also called for careful monitoring of forests and agricultural crops, considering the risks of drought. More than half of France is under a red heatwave alert, affecting 90% of the population, and the government is preparing to implement structural measures to cope with these extreme conditions.
