Croatia has decided to reintroduce mandatory military service, eliminated in 2008, through a vote in Parliament. Young people aged 19 will undergo a two-month training period, with the first recruitments scheduled before the end of the year. All Croatian youths aged 18 must register with military records and participate in a medical examination to determine their fitness.
Recruits will receive a salary of 1,100 euros per month, and the service period will be considered work experience. Women can participate voluntarily, and those who refuse on grounds of conscience can opt for community service activities. In contrast, Romania has adopted a voluntary military service, with a four-month training and financial benefits for recruits.
