In the context of the fundamental changes in security conditions generated by the war in Ukraine, Austria proposes extending the military service from six to nine months. Chancellor Christian Stocker emphasized that the dream of lasting peace in Europe has been shattered, and new threats, such as hybrid attacks and cyber warfare, impose a greater responsibility for the protection of the population.
Currently, men in Austria can choose between military service and a nine-month civilian alternative, but the government proposes extending this alternative by two months, on a voluntary basis. It is also intended to adopt a reserve model for military service. The legislative changes require a two-thirds majority in parliament, which involves the support of the opposition.
