Hungary: NGOs criticize the constitutional amendment aimed at removing Hungarian President Tamas Sulyok and limiting the term of parliament members.

Two human rights organizations in Hungary have criticized the draft of the constitutional amendment initiated by Prime Minister Peter Magyar's government, which proposes the removal of President Tamas Sulyok and the establishment of a maximum term of 12 years for parliamentarians.

The Tisza Party, which won the legislative elections in April, claims that Sulyok is a "puppet" of former Prime Minister Viktor Orban. The amendment would invoke a "serious loss of trust" of society in Sulyok, who has been the president of the Constitutional Court for 10 years.

The human rights group Amnesty International stated that a removal procedure would be more appropriate than a constitutional amendment, and political analyst Gabor Torok criticized the plan to remove Sulyok through a simple amendment.

The Hungarian Civil Liberties Union added that establishing a maximum term for parliamentarians is not an urgent issue and should be part of a broader constitutional review.
