The German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is facing severe criticism for his controversial comments regarding migrants and refugees, which he made last week, insinuating that they have had a negative impact on the appearance of German cities. Following immediate backlash, Merz stood by his statements, suggesting that people should ask their daughters what he meant, which was interpreted by some as racist, implying that male immigrants are more prone to sexual harassment.
Tim Klüssendorf, the Secretary General of the Social Democrats (SPD), emphasized the importance of discussions about issues in Germany but warned against simplifications and generalizations. Similar criticisms also came from the CDU, where legislator Dennis Radtke called for a more appropriate style from the Chancellor, highlighting his responsibility to maintain societal cohesion. Radtke added that issues such as drug addiction and homelessness cannot be solved through deportation but must be addressed appropriately.
