The German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his confidence that the far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) will not succeed in obtaining a majority in the regional elections in the east of the country, which will take place in September. At a press conference, Merz emphasized that, especially in Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, he will do everything possible to counteract the popularity of the AfD, which exceeds 40% in Saxony-Anhalt.

Merz acknowledged that the political situation in eastern Germany is different, but stated that he will continue to maintain optimism until election day. He also mentioned the positive balance of the coalition with the Social Democrats, despite criticisms related to popularity and the need to accelerate structural reforms. The Chancellor avoided commenting on the possible personal consequences of the AfD's electoral victories, which could affect the stability of his government.
