A European law aimed at combating sexual abuse of children in the online environment has triggered a political and technological storm on the continent.
According to an analysis by Politico, the law on combating child sexual abuse material (CSAM), proposed in 2022 by the European Commission, has reached a point where member states can no longer find a compromise between data protection and child safety.
To combat this phenomenon, Brussels proposes that online messaging platforms, from WhatsApp and Signal to Messenger or X (formerly Twitter), be required to "detect, report, and remove" illegal content.
