The European Parliament has adopted a resolution calling for stricter rules to protect minors online, establishing a minimum age of 16 for accessing digital platforms. MEPs emphasize the risks to the physical and mental health of children, demanding accountability from the platforms. Minors aged between 13 and 16 would only be able to access these platforms with parental consent. The European Parliament proposes banning addictive features, such as infinite scrolling and autoplay, as well as measures against targeted advertising and manipulative design.
Additionally, there is a call for regulation of the use of generative artificial intelligence that affects minors. Rapporteur Christel Schaldemose highlighted the importance of these measures for the protection of children in the digital environment.
