Guo Degang, a well-known Chinese comedian and xiangsheng performer, is under investigation in Wuhan after altering the lyrics of a revolutionary song during a performance.
The change of the lyric from "peace on Weishan Lake" to "peace in the Forbidden City" was reported to local authorities, leading to the cancellation of several scheduled performances in August. The show in Xi'an was canceled due to "venue issues," and the promotion company offered refunds for tickets and travel expenses.
This situation highlights the strict control and censorship in China's entertainment industry, where artists must navigate often unclear rules. Guo, who has brought xiangsheng closer to young people, was initially approved by the authorities, but the change of the lyric was not authorized, which could violate regulations.
This is not the first time an artist faces consequences for their work, as another comedian was previously fined for a controversial joke.
