The Carrefour Group has announced the sale of its Italian operations, which includes 1,188 stores, to NewPrinces, after the division posted operating losses of €67 million. The sale will be for a "symbolic price" and is part of the group's strategy to improve profitability. Carrefour also reported a net profit of 210 million euros in the first quarter, down 33% from a year earlier, but turnover rose 3.7%. Carrefour has 341 stores in Romania.
