Bulgaria's interest in the MiG-29 fighter jets from Poland is becoming increasingly unclear, according to MEDIAPOOL's analysis. After the Bulgarian Ministry of Defense stated that there are no negotiations, Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosińska-Kamiś said that Bulgaria would like to buy all available aircraft.
Poland, which has failed to reach an agreement with Ukraine, is using Bulgaria as a support point in negotiations, awaiting a transfer of Ukrainian technology in exchange for the aircraft. Although Ukraine remains a priority, the option to sell the aircraft to Bulgaria is real.
Deputy Ivailo Mircev has urged the Bulgarian government to clarify the details of the acquisition, considering that Poland is moving towards F-35 aircraft, while Bulgaria continues to seek outdated solutions. Criticism focuses on the lack of a transition plan to modern aircraft, given that Bulgaria has allocated 44 million euros for the operation of the MiGs in 2026.
Although Bulgaria has received F-16 aircraft, it will take at least two years until their full integration, leaving the country dependent on Soviet aircraft for air defense.
