Bulgaria will increase the excise duty by 30% from August 2026. What will be the cost of the road tax for drivers?

The Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works of Bulgaria has proposed a 30% increase in vignette fees for vehicles with a weight of up to 3.5 tons, starting from August 1, 2026.

If the project is approved, the annual vignette will increase from 49.60 euros to 64.50 euros, while the quarterly vignette will reach 35.90 euros, compared to 27.61 euros currently. Additionally, short-term vignettes will also be more expensive: the weekly vignette will increase from 7.67 euros to 10 euros, the weekend vignette from 5.11 euros to 6.60 euros, and the one-day vignette will cost 5.30 euros, compared to 4.09 euros at present.

This increase, the first significant one since 2019, also targets raising penalties for drivers without a valid vignette.

The government estimates that the new rates will generate additional revenues of over 20 million euros in 2026, intended for investments in road infrastructure, including repairs and modernization of roads.
