In July 2026, Romania recorded the largest annual increase in prices for fuels and lubricants for personal transport in the European Union, at 24.2% compared with July 2025. Across the EU, the annual increase was 16.9%, while diesel and petrol moved differently from month to month: in the EU, diesel increased by 4.3% between June and July, while petrol rose by 4.7%.
In the second half of the summer, drivers also reported rapid increases at the pump: on August 13, 2026, in many large cities, standard petrol cost more than 9.50 lei per litre, an increase of approximately 20 bani compared with the previous day, while diesel rose by nearly 15 bani, to an average price of 10.67 lei per litre.
On the domestic market, diesel continued to be the variable that pushed prices up over short periods: on September 17, the price of diesel increased by 4 to 14 bani per litre at major networks, while petrol remained almost unchanged, below the threshold of 10 lei per litre.
