Belgium has initiated an investigation after several drones were observed flying over the military base in Marche-en-Famenne, in the southeast of the country. The Minister of Defense, Theo Francken, stated that these flights were not conducted by amateurs, but by professional pilots, which raises questions about the motives behind these incidents.
This is the second similar incident reported in less than a month, prompting the police and ADIV, the Belgian intelligence service, to intervene. Francken emphasized that these activities took place in significant areas of the military base.
In a broader context, NATO countries are on high alert due to the incursion of drones into the airspace of several European states. Recently, Lithuania closed the airport in Vilnius due to suspicious objects, and the European Commission has proposed defense measures, including a drone counteraction system.
