Vilnius Airport was closed on Saturday, while NATO aircraft involved in the air-policing mission took off urgently after a suspected drone was reported to be heading toward Lithuania from Belarus.
The alert was issued by the National Crisis Management Center (NKVC), which recommended that residents of the Vilnius region be prepared to take shelter if the situation required it.
The object has not yet been identified. NKVC chief Vilmantas Vitkauskas told Lithuanian public broadcaster that fighter jets had taken off to verify the situation. Authorities also received reports that a possible object had been spotted outside the city of Vilnius, moving toward Jonava, but the information could not be confirmed.
According to the crisis center, the object's parameters are similar to those of a drone. However, authorities have not ruled out the possibility that the signal was caused by a flock of birds. Checks are continuing, and the airport remains at the center of safety measures.
