Belarus has begun the formation of a new military unit, the 37th Separate Airborne Assault Brigade, in the Gomel region, located about 40 kilometers from the border with Ukraine.
The Commander of the Special Operations Forces, Aleksandr Ilyushkevich, stated that a battalion has already been established, and other artillery and support units are in the process of formation. This brigade adds to the three existing airborne units in Belarus. Ilyushkevich mentioned that the formation includes the recruitment of officers and military personnel, aiming to strengthen the southern flank of the country, considered a major security area.
In recent weeks, Belarus has intensified military activities at the border with Ukraine, including the development of military facilities. Although the Belarusian leader, Aleksandr Lukashenko, has stated that he does not intend to enter the war, Ukrainian officials claim that Moscow is exerting pressure on Minsk for increased military involvement.
