On August 3, 2025, Beijing declared a state of high alert in six districts due to heavy rains that caused the worst flooding since 2012. At least 44 people died, most of them trapped in shelters. The authorities acknowledge shortcomings in contingency plans and the risks of floods and landslides are extremely high. In Guangdong province, five missing people were found dead after heavy rains.
