The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a travel alert for Istanbul, where Turkish authorities have declared a red severe weather warning for October 17 and 18. The warning concerns torrential rain and strong winds, which could cause flooding, landslides, road blockages, and disruptions to public and air transport.
The warning was issued by Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD). The Foreign Ministry advises Romanians in the Istanbul metropolitan area to follow the instructions of the Turkish authorities and avoid non-essential travel.
The red warning was issued after floods paralyzed the city on Wednesday and Thursday, following the heaviest rainfall in decades. At least three people died, including a 14-year-old boy who was electrocuted in a puddle, while four others were reported missing. More than 2,700 people stranded by the floodwaters were evacuated.
At Istanbul Airport, 51 flights were diverted and 19 were canceled. Travelers are advised to check their flight status in advance with the airlines or on the websites of Istanbul’s two airports.
