A Pakistani military Mi-17 helicopter crashed on Wednesday in the area controlled by Pakistan in the Kashmir region, following a technical failure shortly after taking off from the city of Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistani-administered Kashmir. All those on board died, but the exact number of passengers has not been specified.

Helicopters of this type can carry up to 36 fully equipped soldiers. The incident occurred in the context of violent protests that erupted in the region, resulting in 14 deaths, following the banning of a local political movement labeled by authorities as a terrorist group. Security forces deployed helicopters to monitor the demonstrations, but it is unclear whether the crashed helicopter was involved in these operations. Kashmir, a region with a majority Muslim population, is claimed by both Pakistan and India, with the two nuclear powers having a history of conflicts in the area since 1947.
