The incident occurred Wednesday evening at the Metropolitan Detention Centre in Brooklyn, when Mark Anderson, 36 years old, claimed to be an FBI agent and that he possessed documents signed by a judge for the release of a detainee.
When asked for identification, Anderson only presented a Minnesota driver's license and became agitated, throwing papers at the guards. Following a search, officers discovered in his luggage a barbecue fork and a circular metal blade. Anderson has a long history of arrests for drug and alcohol-related offenses and has been deemed unfit for work due to mental health issues. The attempted release took place in the context of the trials of Luigi Mangione, a detainee for the murder of Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, a highly publicized case that draws public attention and supporters of Mangione. The courts are set to decide on the trial schedule and admissible evidence.
