A 19-year-old from Palatine, a suburb of Chicago, was arrested on Sunday and charged with making a terrorist threat and illegal possession of weapons after police discovered indications of a possible mass shooting.
Alexandros Paporakis allegedly sent disturbing electronic messages to someone who alerted authorities. During a search of his home, police found a rifle, several loaded magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, a tactical vest and a patch bearing symbols associated with white supremacist ideology.
Investigators also identified a document attributed to the young man titled “Why I Fought: The Aurora Shooter’s Manifesto.” The material contained extremist views and references to acts of violence against people of South Asian origin, particularly those of Indian descent.
Police suspect the attack may have been planned for Sunday, October 11, and that the target was a Hindu place of worship in Aurora, approximately 65 kilometers from Palatine. The exact location has not been confirmed, and the investigation continues with FBI support.
Paporakis appeared in court on Wednesday, and the judge ordered that he remain in custody. The next hearing is scheduled for October 30. The case comes amid warnings about rising hatred against South Asian communities in the United States.
