A 28-year-old man from the Dominican Republic was shot by a federal ICE agent during an operation in the Marble Hill neighborhood of the Bronx, New York. The incident is the first of its kind involving ICE agents in the city since the start of the Donald Trump administration’s campaign against immigration.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) did not specify what led to the use of the weapon. According to authorities, the man allegedly had ties to the Trinitarios gang and a record for grand larceny, as well as arrests for assault, robbery, and drug and weapons possession. A law enforcement source said an agent fired toward his vehicle.
The man suffered a scratch to his neck, which was not life-threatening, and was taken to hospital by police. A five-year-old child was also in the car and was not injured. DHS said the agents provided the victim with first aid.
Two agents were also injured and hospitalized. The circumstances surrounding one of them reportedly being involved in a traffic accident are unclear. The incident sparked protests and clashes near the hospital. The NYPD did not take part in the operation but later intervened to control the crowd and collect evidence.
The shooting took place in the same week that ICE leadership reportedly asked agents to increase the number of arrests by 1,000 per day.
