Ukraine launched a massive drone attack on Moscow and the region surrounding the Russian capital during the night of October 5–6, according to Russian authorities and the Ukrainian press. One apparent target was the Volodarskaya oil depot, which supplies fuel to Vnukovo, Domodedovo and Sheremetyevo airports.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said that 650 drones had been launched toward the capital. Russia’s air defense claimed to have destroyed most of the drones, including 105 near Moscow. Regional Governor Andrey Vorobyov announced that 185 drones had been intercepted. More than ten homes were damaged, six people were injured and one person died.
The Volodarskaya depot, operated by Transnefteprodukt, part of the state-owned Transneft company, can handle up to three million tons of petroleum products annually. The fire was not confirmed in detail by all sources, and the extent of the damage is still being assessed.
The attack came a few days after a Transneft facility in Samara was hit, sparking a fire. Moscow accuses Ukraine of intensifying attacks on oil infrastructure, which is essential to Russia’s revenue and fuel supply.
