King Abdullah Financial District in Riyadh was hit on Sunday during a missile attack attributed to Houthi forces in Yemen. A building belonging to oil giant Aramco was damaged, according to several witnesses quoted by AFP, although it is unclear whether the damage was caused by the impact of a missile or by falling fragments after it was intercepted.
The coalition led by Saudi Arabia announced that it had intercepted and destroyed two ballistic missiles launched toward the capital, as well as two cruise missiles headed toward Riyadh and the south of the country. The announcement was made after authorities issued an alert, and AFP journalists heard loud explosions.
Witnesses reported that several floors of the Aramco tower had been affected, with broken windows and damage observed on part of the facade.
The attack represents a possible escalation of the conflict between Saudi Arabia and the Houthi rebels, who are fighting in Yemen against the government supported by the Saudi-led coalition. The targeted district is a symbol of the kingdom's economic reforms and is home to towers, commercial spaces, residences, and a metro station.
