Powerful explosions were heard in Riyadh on Monday evening, shortly after Saudi authorities sent an alert message to residents’ phones in the capital. The Saudi-led military coalition later announced that it had intercepted a ballistic missile launched by the pro-Iranian Houthi rebels toward the city.
In the message sent to the public, authorities warned that the area was threatened by an air attack and urged people to remain indoors or in a safe place, away from windows and doors.
The incident comes after a series of attacks attributed to the Houthi rebels. Riyadh airport was closed on Sunday following an attack that left one person dead and 11 injured. A day earlier, another attack claimed by the Houthis left 13 people dead and more than 300 injured.
Saudi Arabia is part of the military coalition fighting the Houthi rebels in the conflict in Yemen. Attacks on Saudi territory have heightened regional tensions and prompted authorities to maintain heightened security measures in the capital.
